Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French dépanneur.
Etymology: < Canadian French dépanneur small local shop (1971 or earlier), transferred use of French dépanneur repair man (1916) < dépanner (1922; < dé- de- prefix + panne breakdown: see pan int.) + -eur -eur suffix.The transferred use of French dépanneur appears to derive from the idea that the shop provides the opportunity for last-minute or emergency purchases.
Canadian.
In Quebec: a small local shop selling goods such as groceries, newspapers, cigarettes, beer, and wine; a convenience store.
