Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀγαλματο-, combining form (in e.g. ἀγαλματοποιός sculptor) of ἀγαλματ-, ἄγαλμα statue, image (see agalma n.) + -lite comb. form1, after scientific Latin agalmatolithus ( M. H. Klaproth Beiträge zur chem. Kenntniss der Mineralkörper (1795) II. 184, in the source translated in quot. 1801, in a German context, alongside German Bildstein , literally ‘image stone, sculpted stone’; compare quot. 1798).
A soapstone or other soft mineral used for carving figures, esp. in China. Cf. pagodite n.
