Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Agamete.
Etymology: < German Agamete (M. Hartmann 1904, in Biol. Centralbl. 24 24) < a- a- prefix6 + Gamete gamete n. Compare ancient Greek ἄγαμος unmarried (see agamous adj.).
Biology.
1. A stage in the life cycle of a protozoan which functions as a non-sexual reproductive cell.
