Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin agalaxia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin agalaxia (1711 or earlier), alteration (perhaps after galaxias galaxy n.) of agalactia agalactia n. With the α. forms compare -y suffix3. Compare French agalaxie (1806 or earlier). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation of agalaxy as (æ·gălæksi) /ˈæɡəlæksi/.
Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Now rare.
