Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin agamae, agamus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin agamae (plural noun) (1811 or earlier), use as noun (short for plantae agamae (plural) asexual plants, although this is apparently first attested slightly later: 1817 or earlier) of feminine plural of agamus (see agamous adj.), after French agames (1803 in Lamarck).
Botany. Now historical and rare.
The plants belonging to the former taxonomic division Cryptogamia; the cryptogamous plants collectively (erroneously believed to have no sexual organs).
