单词 agama
释义

agaman.

Brit. /ˈaɡəmə/, /əˈɡɑːmə/, U.S. /əˈɡeɪmə/, /ˈæɡəmə/
Forms: also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Agama.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Agama, genus name ( F. M. Daudin Hist. nat. des reptiles (1802) III. 333, after earlier use as a specific name by Linnaeus (in Lacerta agama; Systema naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 207)), apparently < a West African language (compare Ewe āgáma, Adangme agama chameleon). With use in South America compare Sranan agama, Ndyuka ángama, both denoting kinds of lizard. Compare French agame (F. M. Daudin 1802 in the source cited above). An alternative etymology ( < ancient Greek ἄγαμος unmarried: see agamous adj.) is suggested by Cuvier (1817), who also points out that, if so, the motivation is unclear.
Any of various diurnal insectivorous lizards belonging (or formerly belonging) to the genus Agama (family Agamidae), which is now restricted to Africa and other warm regions of the Old World, but which originally included similar American forms now placed in the family Iguanidae; esp. the common A. agama of Africa. Also more widely: = agamid n.There is some confusion in early works between Old and New World forms, perhaps partly because Linnaeus erroneously stated that his Lacerta agama inhabits ‘America’.
