Etymology: < post-classical Latin agalactos (1746 or earlier) or its etymon ancient Greek ἀγάλακτος giving no milk ( < ἀ- a- prefix⁶ + γάλακτ- , γάλα milk: see galactic adj.) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ægălæ·ktəs) /æɡəˈlæktəs/.

Chiefly Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. rare.
