Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French procellose.
Etymology: < French procellose (G. Bertrand & S. Benoist 1923, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 176 1583) < pro- pro- prefix2 + cell- (in cellulose cellulose n.) + -ose -ose suffix2.
Chemistry. rare.
A trisaccharide sugar which is a trimer of glucose and is obtained by partial hydrolysis of cellulose.

1923 Nature 30 June 903/1 A new sugar, procellose... Its composition is C18H32O16.
1938 Thorpe's Dict. Appl. Chem. (ed. 4) II. 442/2 The cellotriose is identical with a product described by Bertrand under the name procellose.
