Etymology: Shortened < messieurs n. (originally as a graphic abbreviation). Compare slightly later Mess. n.²Though originally a graphic abbreviation of messieurs n., by the late 19th cent. Messrs. had become established as the usual form in sense 1. It is uncertain at what date the distinctive pronunciation became established: the internal rhyme in quot. 1892 at sense 2 demonstrates it clearly, while earlier evidence implies a disyllabic pronunciation with stress on the first syllable but does not allow reconstruction of the exact pronunciation, as in examples like the following:1822 H.
