Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin maestus , -ive suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin maestus sad, mournful, cognate with classical Latin maerere to be sad, mourn (of unknown origin; perhaps also cognate with classical Latin miser wretched, unfortunate: see miser adj.) + -ive suffix. A Latin adjective in -ivus is not attested. Compare later mestful adj. and mestifical adj.
Chiefly poetic. Obsolete.
Mournful, sad. Cf. mestful adj.
