Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Phaeophyll.
Etymology: < German Phaeophyll (F. Cohn 1867, in Arch. f. mikrosk. Anat. 3 44) < ancient Greek ϕαιός grey (see phaeism n.) + German -phyll -phyll comb. form, after Chlorophyll chlorophyll n. Compare earlier phyllophaein n. at phyllo- comb. form .The use by Schütt (see quot. 1890) has not been traced.
Biochemistry. Now rare.
The brown colouring matter of brown algae, consisting chiefly of fucoxanthin.

1890 Cent. Dict. 4432/3 Phæophyll, a name proposed by Schütt for the compound pigment of the Fucaceæ and Phæosporeæ.
1906 Bot. Gaz. 41 79 He [sc. H. Molisch] holds that the brown pigment is a single substance, phaeophyll, which passes readily over to chlorophyll when treated with hot water, alcohol, and other fluids.
1915 New Phytologist 14 248 Thus Cohn (1865, 1867) supposed the cells of the Phæophyceæ contained a brown pigment called phæophyll nearly allied to chlorophyll.
