1845 W. Gregory Outl. Chem. ii. 512 Laurent considers benzole as in some measure the fundamental compound, or nucleus, and calls it phene.
1857 W. A. Miller Elements Chem. III. 564 Benzole; Benzine, or Phene.
1931 Jrnl. Chem. Soc. ii. 1610 Aromatic hydrocarbons will be denoted by the termination ene and will otherwise retain their customary names. The name phene, however, may be used in place of benzene.
