Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nunc dimittis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin nunc dimittis, short for Nunc dimittis servum tuum Domine..in pace Lord, now you let your servant depart in peace, the Vulgate translation of part of Luke 2:29 (Hellenistic Greek Νῦν ἀπολύεις τὸν δοῦλόν σου, δέσποτα..ἐν εἰρήνῃ ) and hence the opening words of the song of Simeon in liturgical use (see sense 1) < classical Latin nunc now (see now adv.) + dīmittis , 2nd singular present indicative of dīmittere dismiss v.
