Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ὀργιαστικός.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὀργιαστικός of or for orgies, exciting < Hellenistic Greek ὀργιαστής orgiast n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare French orgiastique (1634 in an isolated example in a translation of Aristotle (compare note below); again from 1831).Ὀργιαστής is first recorded in Hellenistic Greek (Plutarch), but may have existed earlier. Aristotle ( Politics 1341a22) uses ὀργιαστικός of the flute as capable of arousing excitement.
Relating to, characterized by, or of the nature of an orgy or orgies; marked by excitement, extravagance, or licentiousness.Quot. 1698 apparently refers to the power of the flute or another wind instrument to excite emotion: see etymological note above and cf. quot. a1871 at orgiastical adj.
