Origin: Probably a word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Probably cognate with an unattested West Germanic noun with the sense ‘excellence, pride’ (compare the corresponding adjective represented by Old High German urguol ‘famous, renowned’); further etymology uncertain. The Germanic noun was borrowed into Old French as orgolz , orgoill (see orgul n.).In the 13th cent. superseded by orgul n. Compare also the Old English strong feminine by-form orgellu (one isolated attestation in form orgello).
