Origin: A borrowing from a Manding language.

Etymology: < a Manding language (compare Bambara fúla ) < Fulfulde Ful- (in Fulɓe , the name of the people: see Fulbe n.). Compare Portuguese fula , fulo (18th cent. or earlier), German Fula (1786 or earlier), and also French foula , foulah (1799 in a translation of an English work; now largely superseded by Peul Peul n.). Compare Pullo n. and the discussion at that entry. Compare earlier Fulbe n.It is unclear whether the forms in the following quotations should be interpreted as showing Pullo n. or Fula n.; with the place name Pholey's Pass (in quot. 1724) compare Portuguese Passo dos Fulos (late 16th or 17th cent.), and also French Passage des Foulies (1764).1724 B.
