Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps a mishearing of Romani romanes (adverb) in a Romani manner (in British Romani pronounced as romanis , now usually used as noun with reference to the language: see Romanes n.).The word apparently spread from G. Borrow's use in quot. 1841. Although this is an account of Gypsy life in Spain, no corresponding noun appears to be attested in Spanish. Borrow had some knowledge of several Romani languages, but often mixed them in his accounts as if they were dialects of the same language. Compare ole n.¹

1967 ‘La Meri’ Spanish Dancing (ed. 2) v. 74 This Romalis is part of a wedding ceremonial. The melody is Eastern; diatonic, low, melancholy and with sudden breathtaking pauses. Some..even identify it with the dance which Salome did before Herod.

2004 L. Charnon-Deutsch Spanish Gypsy iii. 105 He [sc. Richard Ford] claimed that the Gypsy olé or romalis was vastly different from both the bolero and the fandango.
