Etymology: < Spanish ramal branch, strand, strip, (in equestrian or animal husbandry use) lash (1270 as rramal ) < rama branch, stick (see rame n.¹) + -al -al suffix¹.The α. forms are unparalleled in Spanish and apparently reflect oral transmission of the word.

U.S. (chiefly south-western).

A type of long-handled braided whip or quirt attached to a pair of reins, traditionally used in driving cattle. Now frequently attributive.
