Etymology: < the name of the river Eem in the Netherlands (northern Utrecht Province). Originally in Eem-system , after Dutch Eem-stelsel (P. Harting 1874, in Verslagen en mededeelingen der Koninklijke Akademie van Wetenschappen: afdeeling natuurkunde 8 288). Compare Eemian adj.
