Etymology: < a first element of uncertain origin (perhaps compare pine v.; compare also pynepeny n.) + pig n.2 Compare later penny-pig n. at penny n. Compounds 2.The relationship of this word to Scots piner-pig, pinner-pig, in the same sense (with a first element of uncertain origin), is unclear; compare:1800 F. J. Child Eng. & Sc. Pop. Ballads Child Ballads No. 173 B. vii, in Sc. National Dict. at Penure n. I put it in a piner-pig.1913 Trans. Old Glasgow Club II. v. 310, in Sc. National Dict. at Penure n. Children's money-boxes were called ‘pinner pigs’.
Scottish. Now rare.
A pot or earthenware vessel (occasionally a container of tin or some other material) for storing money, esp. savings; a money box. Cf. penny-pig n. at penny n. Compounds 2, piggy bank n.
