Brisson Ornithologia (1760) III. 403 and use as specific name in Linnaeus Systema naturæ (ed. 4, 1746) 78; < post-classical Latin ruticilla redstart (1534 or earlier; < classical Latin rutilus red (see rutilous adj.) after mōtacilla wagtail (see Motacilla n.); compare ancient Greek ϕοινίκουρος (see phoenicurous adj.)) + -ine suffix¹. In later use after scientific Latin Ruticillinae, former subfamily name (1857 or earlier). N.E.D. (1910) gives the pronunciation as (rūtisi·ləin) /ruːtɪˈsɪlaɪn/.

Of or relating to the former genus Ruticilla, which comprised the Old World redstarts, or the former subfamily Ruticillinae, which comprised the redstarts, robins, and nightingales.The redstarts are now in the genus Phoenicurus, and they, along with the chats, now constitute a subfamily within the family Muscicapidae.
