Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: meta- prefix, -o- connective, Greek ξένος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: Apparently < meta- prefix + -o- connective + ancient Greek ξένος stranger, guest (see xeno- comb. form) + -ous suffix, after German metaxen (1884 in the passage translated in quot. 1887). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (metǫ·ksĭnəs) /mɛˈtɒksɪnəs/.
Mycology. Obsolete. rare.
