Inflections: Plural metostea.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: meta- prefix, Greek ὀστέον.
Etymology: < meta- prefix (compare sense 3 at that entry) + ancient Greek ὀστέον bone (see osteo- comb. form).
Zoology (chiefly Ornithology). Now rare. Perhaps Obsolete.
An accessory centre of ossification of the sternum, esp. that of its posterior lateral process in some birds.In quot. 1930, used for the base of the process itself.
