Etymology: < classical Latin metōposcopus ( < Hellenistic Greek μετωποσκόπος < ancient Greek μέτωπον forehead (see metope n.2) + -σκόπος : see -scope comb. form) + -ist suffix. Compare Middle French métoposcope (1578). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (metopǫ·skŏpist) /mɛtəʊˈpɒskəpɪst/.
