Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French metoposcopie; Latin metoposcopia.
Etymology: < Middle French metoposcopie (c1564; 1546 as metaposcopie in the sense ‘physiognomy’; French métoposcopie ) and its etymon post-classical Latin metoposcopia (1531 in the passage translated in quot. 1569 at sense 1) < classical Latin metōposcopus (see metoposcopist n.) + -ia -ia suffix1.The forms in meta- are probably after meta- prefix, or after the French forms in meta-; the sporadically attested form metoscopy appears to represent intermittent shortening by haplography, rather than an independent form with a continuous history.
