Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pteraspis.
Etymology: < pteraspid- , taken as stem of scientific Latin Pteraspis Pteraspis n.: see -id suffix3. Compare scientific Latin Pteraspidae , former family name (E. W. Claypole 1885, in Q. Jrnl. Geol. Soc. 41 56). Compare earlier pteraspidian n., pteraspidian adj.

An armoured, jawless fossil fish (ostracoderm) of the family Pteraspididae (formerly Pteraspidae), found in rocks of the Silurian and Devonian periods.
