Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: megalo- comb. form, Greek αἰσθητής.
Etymology: < megalo- comb. form + ancient Greek αἰσθητής person who perceives (see aesthete n.), here used for ‘organ of sense’; apparently coined by H. N. Moseley (see quot. 18851). Compare micraesthete n.
Zoology.
In a chiton: any of the numerous photoreceptive sensory structures distributed in megalopores over the surface of the valves.
