Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: acrid adj., -idine suffix.
Etymology: < acr- (in acrid adj.) + -idine suffix, after German Acridin (C. Graebe and H. Caro 1870, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 3 746).
Chemistry.
A crystalline heterocyclic compound which occurs naturally in coal tar, is an irritant of the skin and mucous membranes, and is used in the manufacture of dyes and antiseptics; (also) any substituted derivative of this.Acridine has a molecule consisting of two benzene rings fused to a central pyridine ring. Formula: C13H9N.
