Etymology: < Middle French alkakenge, alkacange, alkekange, etc. (15th cent.; French alkékenge), alkekengi, alchechingi, alcacangi, etc. (15th cent.; French †alkékengi) and its etymon post-classical Latin alkakengi, alkekengi (a1400, 1538 in British sources) < Arabic al-kākanj < al the + kākanj winter cherry < an unattested Pahlavi form corresponding to Persian kākuna winter cherry, nightshade. Compare Spanish alquequenje (1555 as alkakengi), Italian alchechengi (1544 as alcachingi).
Now rare.
The Chinese lantern plant, Physalis alkekengi (family Solanaceae).Occasionally also applied (perhaps by confusion) to other plants of similar appearance.
