Chemistry.

A red colouring matter obtained from the root of certain plants of the family Boraginaceae, esp. alkanet ( Alkanna tinctoria), and used as a food colouring and in cosmetics. Cf. alkanet n. 1.Systematic name: 5,8-dihydroxy-2-[1-hydroxy-4-methylpent-3-enyl]naphthalene-1,4-dione; C₁₆H₁₆O₅.Also called anchusin.Quot. 1819 shows an earlier use of pseudo-alcannin to refer to colouring obtained from alkanet, in contrast to colouring obtained from the henna plant; the term alcanna was previously used to refer to both alkanet and the henna plant, as well as the dyes obtained from them (see alcanna n.).
