Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin pediculus , -ate suffix2.
Etymology: < classical Latin pediculus pedicle n.2 + -ate suffix2. Compare scientific Latin pediculata (1791 as a specific name) and French pediculé (1763). In senses A. 2 and B. after scientific Latin Pediculati, order name (1865 or earlier). N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (pĭdi·kiŭlĕt) /pɪˈdɪkjʊlət/.
