Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pétanque.
Etymology: < French pétanque (1932), apparently < Occitan pès tancats , literally ‘feet closed’ < foot ( < classical Latin pēs : see -ped comb. form) + tancar to close, enclose (ultimately < the same base as stanch v.).The game is said to have been invented in La Ciotat near Marseilles in 1910.
A southern French game similar to bowls, but played, usually on a sand or gravel surface, with metal balls which are thrown towards the jack; = boule n.4 2.
