Origin: Probably an imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Probably imitative of the sound made by these birds; compare earlier peep n.1, peeper n.1 Dict. Amer. Regional Eng. s.v. also records the word in use from the late 19th cent. as an interjection used to call chickens or turkeys.
U.S. regional and Jamaican.
A small or young chicken. Also (chiefly Jamaican): a young turkey.
