1947 R. E. Kirk & D. F. Othmer Encycl. Chem. Technol. I. 16 Raschig rings have the greatest number of applications because they provide a large effective surface of contact between the gas and the liquid phases and they have a large free volume.

2. Raschig process n. any of various industrial processes developed by Raschig, spec. (a) a process for the industrial production of phenol in which benzene vapour is heated with hydrogen chloride and air over a copper-containing catalyst to yield chlorobenzene, which is then hydrolysed to yield phenol; (b) a process for the industrial production of hydrazine from sodium hypochlorite and ammonia; (c) a process for the industrial production of hydroxylamine in which ammonium nitrate is converted to hydroxylamine disulphonate and then to hydroxylamine sulphate.
