Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French rascasse.
Etymology: < French rascasse (1554 in Middle French) < Old Occitan rascassa kind of fish (1433; Occitan rascassa ), use as noun of feminine of rascas having scabies (13th cent.) < rasca (see rash n.4). Compare Spanish rescaza (late 18th cent.), rascacio (1789), Catalan rascassa, rascàs, Portuguese rascasso (1890), all < Occitan.
Either of two small scorpionfishes, Scorpaena scrofa and S. porcus, found chiefly in the Mediterranean, which have reddish skin and spiny fins which can cause painful wounds, and which are used esp. as an ingredient of bouillabaisse.
