Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Dutch mangestain; French mangostan.
Etymology: Partly (i) < Dutch †mangestain (1596 in the source translated in quot. 1598 at sense 1, also mangesteyn; now mangostan), and partly (ii) < Middle French mangostan (1598, French mangoustan (1604)), both < Portuguese mangostãe (16th cent.)); all European forms are ultimately < Malay manggustan, manggistan mangosteen (now regional; the current standard Malay and Indonesian word is manggis).
1. The fruit of the mangosteen tree (see sense 2), of the size of a small apple and with a thick dark-purple rind enclosing a sweet, white, juicy pulp.
