单词 maize
释义

maizen.adj.

Brit. /meɪz/, U.S. /meɪz/
Forms: 1500s mahiz, 1500s maith, 1500s mayis, 1500s–1700s maiz, 1500s–1700s mayze, 1500s–1800s mais, 1600s maes, 1600s maijs, 1600s maix, 1600s mass, 1600s mayes, 1600s–1700s mays, 1600s–1700s mayz, 1600s–1700s maze, 1600s– maize, 1700s maez, 1800s maise. Also 1500s–1600s maizium (in post-classical Latin form).
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish mahiz.
Etymology: < Spanish †mahiz (now maíz ; first attested 1500 in Columbus's diary, although slightly earlier in post-classical Latin as maizium ) < Taino mahiz or mahís . With the Taino word compare marisi , reported by N.E.D. from another Arawak language, spoken in Guyana, and Carib ‘márichi , bled d'Inde’ (Breton, Dict. Caraïbe, 1665). The Spanish word entered English both directly and via either post-classical Latin maizium (Peter Martyr of Angleria: see quot. 1555 at sense 1b) or French †maith (N. de Nicolai, 1554: see quot. 1585 at sense 1a). Compare also French †maiz, †maizi (1519, 1533 in translations from Italian), †mais (1568 in a translation from Spanish), maïs (also denoting a colour from mid 19th cent.), Italian †maice, †maiz (1520 onwards), mais, and German †Machiz (1520), †Maytz (1534), Mais.
