Etymology: < post-classical Latin anadiplosis (of a word or syllable) reduplication (5th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek ἀναδίπλωσις reduplication, already in ancient Greek in the sense ‘convolution’ < ancient Greek ἀναδιπλοῦν to double, to fold, in Hellenistic Greek also (of a word or syllable) to reduplicate ( < ἀνα- ana- prefix + διπλοῦν to double: see diploma n.) + -σις -sis suffix.Compare Middle French, French anadiplose (1555), Old Occitan anadyplozis (14th cent.), Spanish anadiplosis (end of the 15th cent.).

Repetition of a word or phrase for rhetorical effect; spec. a device whereby the last word of a sentence, line, or clause is repeated at the beginning of the next sentence, line, or clause. Also: an instance of such repetition. Cf. epanadiplosis n.
