Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French anaérobie.
Etymology: < French anaérobie (see anaerobian n. and adj.), with ending perhaps remodelled after microbe n. Compare German Anaërobe (1884 in the passage translated in quot. 1884). Compare earlier anaerobian n., anaerobian adj. Compare also aerobe n.
Biology.
An organism, esp. a microorganism, that has the ability to live in the absence of oxygen. Cf. earlier anaerobian n.Obligate or strict anaerobes can live only in the absence of oxygen; facultative anaerobes are capable of living in its presence as well as in its absence.
