Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Abiëtit.
Etymology: < German Abiëtit (F. Rochleder 1868, in Sitzungsber. der Kaiserlichen Akad. der Wissensch. Wien: Math.-Naturwissensch. Klasse 58 222) < classical Latin abiet- , abiēs fir (see abietic adj.) + German -it -ite suffix1. Compare French abiétite (1869 or earlier; < German).Rochleder coined the substance name from scientific Latin Abies, genus name (valid publication: P. Miller, 1754). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ·biˌĕtəit) /ˈæbɪətaɪt/.

A sugar extracted from the needles of the European silver fir, Abies alba.

1869 Chem. News 23 Apr. 203/1 Abietite (Les Mondes) is a substance discovered by Rochleder in the needle-like leaves of the Abies pectinata.
1872 H. Watts Dict. Chem. Suppl. 1 The needles of Abies pectinata contain a sugar called abietite, very much like mannite, but differing therefrom by its relations to solvents, and by its composition, which is represented by the formula C6H8O3.
