Etymology: < classical Latin mordāc-, mordāx given to biting, corrosive, sharp to the taste, stinging, (of people, remarks, etc.) biting, caustic ( < mordēre to bite (see mordant adj.) + -āx : see -acious suffix) + -ious suffix; compare -acious suffix. Compare Italian mordace (a1292), Spanish mordaz (1467), Portuguese mordaz (16th cent.), Catalan mordaç (1628). Compare earlier mordant adj.
