Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mordacité.
Etymology: < Middle French, French mordacité quality of a corrosive substance (1490; early 16th cent. in figurative sense) < classical Latin mordācitās the power of biting or stinging (in Pliny Nat. Hist.; also in post-classical Latin in sense 2 (4th cent.)) < mordāc- , mordax (see mordacious adj.) + -itās -ity suffix. Compare Italian mordacità corrosive quality (c1340; 1558 in figurative sense ‘gossip, acrimony’; 1643 in sense ‘biting strength, pungency’).
