Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin morbus.
Etymology: < classical Latin morbus disease (see morbid adj.).Originally (and still frequently) occurring in medical Latin compounds not fully integrated into English, as morbus caducus (see falling disease n. at falling adj. Compounds 1), morbus elephancia (see elephancy n.), regius morbus (see king's evil n.). Certain compounds have become more fully integrated: compare morbus gallicus n., and cholera morbus n. at cholera n. Compounds 2.
Medicine.
A disease. Rare except with distinguishing (usually scientific Latin) word or words, denoting particular pathological conditions. Cf. mal n.cholera morbus: see cholera n. 3.
