Etymology: < classical Latin imperātōrius of or belonging to a commanding officer, of the Roman emperor, imperial < imperātor (see imperator n.) + -ius , suffix forming adjectives; compare -ory suffix2. Compare earlier imperative adj.Compare Middle French imperatoire (15th cent.; rare).
