Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pudor.
Etymology: < classical Latin pudor shame, modesty < pudēre to make or be ashamed (see pudent adj.) + -or -or suffix. Compare Middle French, French pudeur pudeur n., Spanish pudor (1607; < French), Portuguese pudor (1540), Italian pudore (a1306).
Now rare.
A due sense of shame or decency; bashfulness, modesty. Cf. pudeur n.
