单词 pudic
释义

pudicadj.n.

Brit. /ˈpjuːdɪk/, U.S. /ˈpjudɪk/
Forms: late Middle English pudeyque, late Middle English pudyke, late Middle English–1600s pudike, 1500s 1700s pudique, 1700s– pudic; Scottish pre-1700 pudick, pre-1700 pudict, pre-1700 pudik, pre-1700 pudike, pre-1700 pudique, pre-1700 1700s 1900s– pudic. N.E.D. (1909) also records a form late Middle English pudique.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French pudique; Latin pudīcus.
Etymology: < Middle French pudique modest, chaste (implied c1370 by pudiquement (adverb)), designating an artistic representation of a nude figure, especially Venus, with the hands or clothing covering the genitals or breasts (1630 or earlier) and its etymon classical Latin pudīcus chaste, decent, honourable, in post-classical Latin also pudendal (1733 or earlier) < pudēre to make or be ashamed (see pudent adj.) + -icus -ic suffix. The specific uses with reference to anatomy are apparently not paralleled in French, but compare French artère honteuse pudendal artery (1732 or earlier; now rare), literally ‘shameful artery’. Compare Catalan púdic (1498), Spanish púdico (first half of the 15th cent.), Italian pudico (a1292). Compare pudical adj., pudical n.
