Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pudibundus.
Etymology: < classical Latin pudibundus easily ashamed, bashful, modest, shameful < pudēre to make or be ashamed (see pudent adj.) + -bundus, suffix forming verbal adjectives. Compare Middle French, French †pudibund, French pudibond that is a subject or cause of shame (1488 in Middle French in parties pudibundes the genitals), modest, bashful (1542), prudish (1690)).In form pudibond apparently after French pudibond (1671).
