Etymology: In α. forms < (i) Middle French galamell (probably 14th cent.), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin calamellus sugar cane (from 12th cent. in continental sources), of uncertain origin, perhaps a variant (with assimilation of consonants and change of gender) of either canamella or canna mellis (see below) by association with diminutive formations in -ellus -ellus suffix. In β. forms < post-classical Latin canamella sugar cane (from 12th cent. in British and continental sources), earlier canna mellis (11th cent.; 14th cent. in a British source) < classical Latin canna cane (see cane n.¹) + mellis , genitive of mel honey (see mell n.²).
