Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin fossula; French fossule.
Etymology: Either < classical Latin fossula (see fossula n.; compare -ule suffix), or < French fossule (1803 or earlier; < classical Latin fossula ), although this is apparently rare. Compare earlier fossula n.
Chiefly Zoology. Now rare.
A fossula (in various senses).
