Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French fossé.
Etymology: < French fossé (c1100 in Old French as fosset ) < post-classical Latin fossatum ditch, trench, canal, moat (4th cent.), dyke, embankment (11th cent.), use as noun of neuter of past participle of classical Latin fossāre (recorded in an isolated attestation in classical Latin in Ennius, if the reading is correct), frequentative formation < fodere to dig (see fodient adj.). Compare earlier fowsie n. N.E.D. (1897) gives the unassimilated pronunciation (fo·se) /ˈfose/.
Originally Scottish. Obsolete.
A fosse (in various senses); esp. a defensive ditch.
